چکیده

Many studies and reviews (e.g. Morton 1977; Fitch & Hauser 1995, 2002; Fitch 1997, 2000) have discussed the potential for mammalian vocalizations to provide honest signals of body size. Researchers have frequently investigated the link between fundamental frequency, F0 (i.e. pitch), and body size, but have not always found strong relationships between the two (e.g. Lass & Brown 1978; Masataka 1994; van Dommelen & Moxness 1995; Rendall et al. 2005). Lowest possible F0 is determined by the length of Correspondence Tara R. The alarm call system of two species of black-and-white colobus monkeys (Colobus polykomos and Colobus guereza).

Vervet monkey alarm calling has long been the paradigmatic example of how primates use vocalizations in response to predators. In vervets, there is a close and direct relationship between the production of distinct alarm vocalizations and the presence of distinct predator types. Recent fieldwork has however revealed the use of several additional alarm calling systems in primates. Here, the auth...

Gastrointestinal parasites of the colobus monkeys of Uganda.

From August 1997 to July 2003, we collected 2,103 fecal samples from free-ranging individuals of the 3 colobus monkey species of Uganda-the endangered red colobus (Piliocolobus tephrosceles), the eastern black-and-white colobus (Colobus guereza), and the Angolan black-and-white colobus (C. angolensis)--to identify and determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites. Helminth eggs, larvae...

Parasite prevalence and richness in sympatric colobines: effects of host density.

Factors that influence proximity and the number and duration of contacts among individuals can influence parasite transmission among hosts, and thus parasite prevalence and species richness are expected to increase with increasing host density. To examine this prediction we took advantage of a unique situation. Following the clearing of a forest fragment that supported red colobus (Piliocolobus...

Group Size Dynamics over 15+ Years in an African Forest Primate Community

Group size affects many aspects of the ecology and social organization of animals. We investigated group size stability for five primate species in Kibale National Park, Uganda from 1996 to 2011 at three nested spatial scales. Survey data indicated that group sizes did not change for most species, with the exception of red colobus monkeys (Procolobus rufomitratus), in which group size increased...

Determinants of colobine monkey abundance: the importance of food energy, protein and fibre content

1. A fundamental ecological question is what determines the abundance of animals? Answering this question is vital in the formulation of effective management plans for endangered or threatened species. However, there are few general hypotheses proposed to account for variation in animal abundance. Studies of folivorous primates are a notable exception. In this group, the protein to fibre ratio ...
